Sexual Health Eduction

Middle Schools in the state of Hawaii are required to provide Sexual Health Education that follows the requirements set forth in the Hawai‘i Revised Statutes (HRS) §321-11.1 Medically Accurate Sexuality Health Education, Hawai‘i State Board of Education (Board) Policy 103-5 Sexual Health Education, and aligns with state Health Education standards.

At KMS we will be teaching sexual health in our PE/Health and Team Sports classes during the month of May 2023. The curriculum, HealthSmart, is aligned with Hawai‘i’s Health Education standards and has been reviewed using criteria from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Health Education Curriculum Analysis Tool (HECAT), the CDC’s Characteristics of an Effective Health Education Curriculum, and the National Sex Education Standards. The curriculum covers the following topic areas:

  • Abstinence, Puberty, and Personal Health
  • HIV, STI, and Pregnancy Prevention

Parents or legal guardians have the option to “opt-out” of the curriculum, if they so choose. Letters are being sent home to all students enrolled in our PE/Health and Team Sports classes on Friday, March 24th. To “opt-out” please complete the bottom portion of the form and return to your child’s PE/Health teacher by April 21, 2023. If we do not receive a signed and dated opt-out form by the beginning of instruction, we will understand that your child has your approval to participate in the curriculum. A printable copy of this letter is attached at the bottom of this page.
Should you have any questions, please contact your child's PE/Health or Team Sports teacher at (808)821-4460.
